The Art of Being Me

About

Identity questions are key to every society. Identity involves many topics like ethnicity, language, age, gender, economic situation, labour, traditions, living surroundings and many more. Currently, many artists, theatre makers, authors, researchers, and many more reflect on identity in their work and on various levels like individuality, society, history and others.

In contrast to simplified and harmful public debates and statements, they often critically reflect various approaches to individual identity and to the exclusivity it often involves. With their artistic language, they offer possibilities for dialogue and reflection as well as new forms of collaboration which are desperately sought by many people in their questions towards (their) identity.

The project THE ART OF BEING ME aims at starting a series of artistic events and artist talks on identity questions that are reflected in the work of the artists involved. Objectives are to give the involved artists a platform for discussion and exchange on identity questions with an interested audience, in particular artists, students of the arts and people reflecting on identity questions.

The project is financially supported by EUNIC (European Union National Institutes for Culture; the European network of organisations engaging in cultural relations from all EU member states) and organised by the Czech Center, the Goethe Institute and the Austrian Cultural Forum with the support of British Council, FinnAgora, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Hungary.

Curators are Noémi Herczog and Krisztián Török.

Our Team

Czech Centre in Budapest

The Czech Centre in Budapest was established in 1993 in the Zichy Palace in the sixth district of Budapest where the Czech (Czechoslovak) Embassy has been located since 1922. The main objective of the activities of the Centre is to develop a dialogue with the Hungarian public, especially by promoting Czecho-Hungarian cultural events.

Austrian Cultural Forum

Since 1976, the Austrian Cultural Forum in Budapest has served as a platform for cultural contacts between Hungary and Austria through the variety of its events. The Cultural Forum supports artists and projects in the fields of music, literature, performing and visual arts and film but also symposia and discussion events.

Goethe Institute

The Goethe-Institut is the cultural institute of the Federal Republic of Germany with a global reach. We promote knowledge of the German language abroad and foster international cultural cooperation. We convey a comprehensive image of Germany by providing information about cultural, social and political life in our nation. Our cultural and educational programmes encourage intercultural dialogue and enable cultural involvement. They strengthen the development of structures in civil society and foster worldwide mobility. We are partners for all who actively engage with Germany and its culture, working independently and without political ties.

British Council

The British Council builds connections, understanding and trust between people in the UK and other countries through arts and culture, education and the English language. We help young people to gain the skills, confidence and connections they are looking for to realise their potential and to participate in strong and inclusive communities. We support them to learn English, to get a high-quality education and to gain internationally recognised qualifications. Our work in arts and culture stimulates creative expression and exchange and nurtures creative enterprise.
